THE PROJECT

A outdoor projection event, lasting several hours and over one evening, will take place during Mediations using artists / performers coming from different local scenes, such as sound poets, musicians, singers, rappers who will do several live performances that explore the value and function of (non-official) culture in the city. This includes everything from local squats and self-organized cultural spaces to independent artists and groups.

Texts from a series of interviews with different cultural organizations and players in the city will be transformed into lyrics, becoming working material for local performers who will 'perform the text' and become like 'town criers'. These performers will be suggested by the various organizations that we are interviewing and could come from within the organizations and cultural groups themselves. These performances will occur live and be projected against the façade of one of the many empty buildings within the city. This should represent a space that is currently not being used but could be used for cultural purposes.

During the evening a large-scale projection of video will cover the facade of a building. A video projector will be connected to a live camera, either via a video sender or by being directly connected via a video cable. The audio can either be a radio broadcast that people can listen to via various radios (cars, in homes, or radios that they bring to the event) or broadcasted out through a sound system.

There will be some representation of the project within one of the presentation spaces in the city that will accompany the intervention.

PRODUCTION

The project will be developed starting the first week of May until the opening of the Biennale through a series of workshops conducted together with a team of at least 4 students from the art academy. More would be possible and also desirable, such as 8 students. But what I would really like is to be working with students that are able to stay with the project starting now until September. Or if not, to be completely committed at least to point that all the interviews have been made and the text transcribed and edited.

As I will not often be in Poznan and do not speak Polish it is very important that I am working with a committed, responsible and independent group. I will be giving them lots of responsibilities.

Here is a list of qualities that I am looking within future collaborators. Preferable to have a mix of women and men.

- living in Poznan, even throughout the summer
- interested in socially engaged ways of working, good at researching and able to conduct interviews
- can speak english
- resourceful, can act independently
- interested in and knowledgeable about the local culture scene in Poznan
- willing to commit from the beginning to the end of the project

also good to have, but not necessary for everybody to have these skills (although at least one member of the group should have these skills)
- experience working with audio / video (radio) broadcasts
- some technical expertise in audio/visual equipment - cable construction, microphones, pa system, video projector, etc
- graphic design experience

Everybody involved in the project will be recognized and acknowledged as collaborators within the project.

In addition I require an assistant (not one of the students) that I will need to do things like:

- arranging equipment
- getting permission for use of building
- getting access for building and arranging for things like power for the equipment. (if the electricity is turned off)
- arranging all required materials
- communicating with and organizing schedule for performers
- liason between myself and different cultural players in the city.
- research and locate resources in the city based on various needs of the project

The workshops will be the following and at the following dates: These are suggested dates. For example, I don't know when summer holidays are. We should discuss realistic dates. However the first two dates are quite difficult to change for me since I am traveling quite a lot with other projects and will not be able to be in Poland.
